Peter wasn't ashamed of miracle-working Jesus. He was ashamed of Jesus on His way to the cross.
When Jesus appeared to be marching toward a throne, Peter was ready to fight for Him. But when Jesus surrendered to arrest and suffering, Peter hid—three times insisting, "I do not know Him." In this message, Pastor Mike Wilson examines Peter's denial in John 18 and asks what turned one of Jesus' boldest disciples into someone hiding by a charcoal fire.
Peter followed close enough to watch, but far enough away to avoid being identified with Jesus—close enough to claim Him when convenient, distant enough to blend in with the world. Denial rarely begins with atheism. It begins with distance.
Peter wanted a Messiah who would bring power, victory, and comfort. He wasn't ready for a Messiah who led through suffering and death. That same temptation is still with us: our culture will tolerate "Jesus changed my life," but resists the claims that Jesus is Lord, repentance is necessary, and eternity is real.
Three days later, the risen Christ explained the gospel plainly—and Peter would go on to proclaim it without shame. This message asks the same question of us: are we following Jesus, or just asking Him to follow our plans?
